What A Professional Wallpaper Installer actually does (ANd why it’s worth it)

Wallpaper looks simple in a video: paste, smooth, trim, done. In real homes, the difference between a wall that looks custom and one that looks DIY comes down to the steps you never see.

At Pro Image Painting LLC, wallpaper has its own dedicated division and its own trained installers. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what happens on one of our wallpaper jobs, and why homeowners across New Hampshire trust us with their most expensive rolls.

Step 1: Measuring and layout before anything is cut

We measure every wall, window, and door, and account for the pattern repeat. Then we plan where the first strip goes and where the final seam will land, usually in the least visible corner.

This is also where we catch problems early: walls that aren't plumb, a pattern that will look off-center over a fireplace, or an order that's a roll or two short.

Step 2: Protecting your home

Floors, furniture, and trim get covered before work begins. Our crew keeps a clean job site every day, and yes, we're pet friendly.

Step 3: Removal and wall repair

If there's old wallpaper, we score it, soften the adhesive, and remove every bit of paper and glue residue. Leftover glue is one of the top causes of new wallpaper failing.

Then we fill cracks, repair any torn drywall paper, and sand until the surface is smooth. Wallpaper shows what's under it, so this step can't be rushed.

Step 4: The right primer

We apply a wallpaper-specific primer matched to your paper. It helps the adhesive grip, lets us slide strips into perfect position, and protects your walls so the paper can come down cleanly someday.

Step 5: Hanging with precision

This is where experience shows:

  • Pattern matching at every seam, so the design flows across the wall.

  • Tight, invisible seams on printed papers, and well-planned seams on grasscloth.

  • Clean cuts around outlets, switches, windows, and trim.

  • Following each manufacturer's instructions, which vary for paste type, booking time, and strip direction.

  • Checking each roll for print defects or shading before it goes on the wall, not after.

Step 6: Final walkthrough

We inspect every seam and edge, clean up, and walk the room with you before we call it done.

The DIY mistakes we fix most often

We get calls every season from homeowners who started a project and got stuck. The most common issues:

  • Running out of paper mid-room, then finding the new rolls don't match the first batch.

  • Bubbles and lifting seams from skipped primer or the wrong paste.

  • Patterns that drift or don't match at the seams.

  • Torn drywall from removing old paper too aggressively.

  • Stained grasscloth from paste on the front of the fibers.

Designer wallpaper can be a significant investment. A professional install protects that investment and gives you a finish that lasts.

Questions to ask any wallpaper installer

  1. Do you have installers who specialize in wallpaper, or is it a side service?

  2. Will you measure and tell me how many rolls to order?

  3. Is wall prep and old wallpaper removal included in your estimate?

  4. What primer do you use?

  5. Have you hung this type of paper (grasscloth, mural, vinyl) before? Can I see photos?

  6. Are you insured?
